Rehabilitation is for people who have lost abilities like physical, mental, and/or cognitive (thinking and learning). They may have lost them because of a disease or injury or as a side effect from a medical treatment. Rehabilitation can improve these abilities for your daily life. Physical medicine and rehabilitation is a team approach. Team members are doctors, other health professionals, the patient, and their family or caregivers.

There are many types of rehabilitation therapy, each designed to address specific ranges of issues. These Therapies are:

Physical Therapy

This type of rehabilitation therapy works to improve movement dysfunction. Therapists work with patients to restore movement, strength, stability and/or functional ability and reduce pain via targeted exercise and a range of other treatment methods.

Occupational Therapy

This form of therapy focuses on restoring an individual’s ability to perform necessary daily activities. This may mean working to improve fine motor skills, restore balance, or assist patients in learning how to increase their functional ability via use of adaptive equipment, among other potential treatment options.

Respiratory Therapy – This therapy is used to aid patients who have breathing disorders or difficulties, this form of rehabilitation therapy works to help them decrease respiratory distress, maintain open airways and, when necessary, learn how to use inhalers and supplemental oxygen properly.

Cognitive Rehabilitation

This type of therapy works with patients to improve memory, thinking and reasoning skills. The patients who have mental disorder due to accident or stress, this therapy is applied on them.

All these therapies are used for rehabilitation of a person who suffers from mental or physical disabilities. These therapies are easily available in healthcare centers. Rehabilitation often also takes place in a skilled nursing facility or rehabilitation center outside of a hospital.
